Cobras in Northamptonshire

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service has taken delivery of three PolyBilt Scania fire appliances equipped with Cobra systems for remote fire fighting.  With Cobra, the first fire fighters on the scene can locate and attack the fire immediately from the relative safety of outside.

The COBRA cutting extinguisher uses an innovative and unique fire fighting technique where the fire fighter attacks the fire from the safety of outside by piercing a hole in the exterior and blowing a powerful mist of very fine water droplets into the fire compartment.  This effectively chokes the fire and cools down the hot fire gases.

The core temperature is then reduced without the addition of oxygen BEFORE fire fighters have to enter, so eliminating the potential for back draft and flashover. This greatly increases the safety of the fire fighters. COBRA is a cold cutting technique and therefore is extremely safe and effective in potentially flammable or explosive environments.

Following the warm reception of their first three Cobra appliances, Northamptonshire has ordered a further three from John Dennis Coachbuilders.
